New Poem by Nada Y Gabobe, capturing Somaliland’s sacrifices & struggle for freedom

PLANTING THE FLAG

SNM

A call to death, bombs befell Hargeisa like rainfall,

Blasting like thunder, people ran from their graves,

The melody of fascism was heard from every corner,

And the cries of the people echoed across the land,

The Somalinimo loving people, the greater brotherhood people,

Where paying for the sin of putting your brother ahead of yourself,

Their doors shook at night, as these foreign hands knocked,

Fear seeped into the land, and coloured the minds of the people,

They poured acid on the hearts of Somalilanders,

Killing the love for brotherhood and unity,

For it was no more than a fantasy carried by Somalilanders,

The Dreseden of Africa, they walked to Ethiopia,

And in open arms were greeted with brotherhood,

The Somaliweyn dream was buried forever.

Darkness clouded Somaliland,

And hope was dancing in the realms of illusion,

The mighty force thought the sun would never set,

And they continued to shed blood,

Until the rivers and seas were covered in red hue,

From the ashes rose, a force of good,

Warriors carrying hope for the people,

Slim and mighty, they witnessed drying corpses,

And dead bodies with gun wounds still oozing red,

They walked with brave hearts, and a commanding stride,

Gun in hand, marked with bravery,

They opened fire and fought with might!

A man’s most precious gift, life they gave,

A mother’s most precious gift, her son she lost!

Victory came like rain on drought ridden land,

On a morning in Burco, the flag was planted,

Spreading its rays of hope across Somaliland,

Lifting the darkness that befell the land,

SNM came to wish the people good fortune at last!
