Somaliland is a Reliable Partner
By Mohamud Abdi Daar
The statement made by the Somaliland Ministary of Foreign Affairs on January 15, 2023, was appropriate in response to the press release made by the American ambassador, Mr Larry Andire, in Mogadishu, on January 13, 2023 concerning Somaliland. It was unfortunate that the Ambassador’s statement fell short of the reality on the ground.
As is known, Somaliland had peacefully split from Somalia in May 1991 when its people decided to restore its earlier political independence.
Since that time, Somaliland had never been under the jurisdiction of Somalia. Somaliland exists as a De Facto independent state, similar to other states including Taiwan, Abkhasia, the Northern Turkish Republic in Cyprus and the former Kosovo. Such entities enjoy rights and have special status under International Law, and as such they are entitled to their appropriate names.
Furthemore, Somaliland demands diplomatic recognition by the International community.
She fulfils all the necessary conditions for statehood. In this context, it is important to point out as a viable, peaceful and democratic country she enjoys the acceptance and confidence of the international community as a reliable partner which consistently promotes
international peace and security and fights against the evils of terrorism, piracy and human trafficking which pose serious threat to the international community today.
